About the Duck Feet Baby Socks

Duck is a creative baby sock pattern designed by Jeny Staiman. Instead of making a conventional pair of baby socks, the design exaggerates the toe area into three webbed-looking sections that resemble a duck's foot.

The designer developed the idea after realizing that socks for babies who are not yet walking do not need to follow all of the same practical constraints as adult socks. That freedom made it possible to create a much more playful shape.

The result is part sock, part novelty baby bootie, and a project that is especially memorable as a handmade baby-shower or newborn gift.

Baby Size and Finished Measurements

The original Duck pattern is written for an infant size of approximately 3–9 months.

The published finished measurements are:

Foot length: 5 inches
Cuff circumference: 4.5 inches

Babies vary considerably in size, so compare the finished measurements with the intended baby's foot when possible rather than relying only on the age range.

Yarn for Duck Feet Baby Socks

The original sample was knitted using Shibui Knits Sock Yarn, a fine superwash merino sock yarn.

The pattern calls for one 50-gram skein with approximately 191 yards / 175 meters.

A soft sock yarn is a practical choice for this type of baby project. Yellow, orange, or gold can create a classic duck-inspired look, but the unusual shape also works well in brighter or completely unexpected colors.

Needles and Gauge

The official pattern recommends US 2 / 2.75 mm needles.

The published gauge is:

32 stitches × 48 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

The designer notes that the socks may be worked using circular needles, double-pointed needles, or the magic-loop method depending on your preference.

What Makes This Pattern Different?

The most distinctive feature is the exaggerated webbed foot. Instead of ending with a traditional rounded sock toe, the knitting is shaped into three separate toe sections that give the finished project its unmistakable duck-foot appearance.

Applied I-cord is also used as part of the construction and finishing, helping define the unusual shape.

Because of these details, this is more adventurous than a basic beginner baby sock pattern, but it is also much more unusual and entertaining to knit.
