Understanding the Knitting Chart

Knitting charts are a fantastic visual way to see how your fabric will develop. To read this chart correctly, keep these two golden rules of flat knitting in mind:

1. Right-Side (RS) Rows (1, 3, 5, 7, 9):Read from right to left

2. Wrong-Side (WS) Rows (2, 4, 6, 8, 10): Read from left to right

The Key:

Blank Square: Knit (K) on the right side, Purl (P) on the wrong side.

Circle Symbol (O): Purl (P) on the right side, Knit (K) on the wrong side.

Note: By switching the stitches on alternating sides, the circles always create a raised, textured ridge (purl bumps) on the front of your work, while the blank squares create a smooth stockinette background.

Top Tips for Success

  • Use Stitch Markers: Place a stitch marker every 8 stitches. Because the pattern shifts diagonally every two rows, markers will help you easily spot if you’ve accidentally misplaced a purl or a knit stitch.
  • Choose the Right Yarn: To make this texture pop like the sample image, choose a smooth, tightly spun yarn in a solid or heathered color (like a classic slate blue or denim). Highly variegated or fuzzy yarns will hide the crisp diagonal lines.
  • Block Your Work: Once you finish your project, give it a gentle wash and lay it flat to dry (blocking). This relaxes the stitches and helps the chevron ridges settle beautifully into their zig-zag shapes.

Repeat rows 1 through 10 until your piece reaches its desired length. Happy knitting!
